ICSI is een hooggespecialiseerde en tijdrovende kunstmatige bevruchtingstechniek waarbij een groot aantal voorbereidingen en handelingen worden verricht: onder andere het isoleren en 'schoonmaken' van de eicel, het isoleren en bewerken van de zaadcel. Uiteindelijk wordt de geisoleerde zaadcel rechtsreeks in de eicel 'ingespoten'. Dit laatste is het 'moment supreme' dat binnen enkele seconden kan zijn voltooid.
