Explanation
Glossary of Acronyms in Reproductive Medicine
Acronyms are letter-words created by the first letter of a number of
words, such as NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and NASA (National
Aeronautic and Space Administration). They are designed to facilitate rapid exchange
of information between individuals.
Instead of having to pronounce a long phrase over and over again it is
easier to use these letter words provided both individuals understand their meanings. It is easier to talk about the technique TUNEL than to recite
Terminal transferase Mediated UTP Biotin Nick end Labeling, although sometimes simpler words might serve
this purpose equally well.
However secondary to this, acronyms have unintentionally
acquired some kind of esoteric status symbol: when an insider mentions such a
word that the
listener does not understand the latter may feel ignorant, and may be impressed with the
former persons knowledge-ability.
Hence an acronym- just as techno-slang and emoticons on the
internet- divides the world into an elitist minority of those that know and the vast
masses of outsiders that do not know.
In Reproductive Medicine a bewildering array of acronyms- often
misused as such- have been created. Sometimes one gets the impression that some of them
are not so much there to facilitate verbal or written interaction between individuals as
to immortalize the person who invented it.
The vast majority of these words, however, will
inevitably sink into oblivion along with the name of their inventors. Only very few acronyms
such as IVF and ICSI will remain for a long time. On this list you can see acronyms that
have been used in the literature in the past in Reproductive Medicine. Many of them have
already become extinct; however all of them have been used for a shorter or longer period
of time in the past 15 years.
If you miss acronyms that are- or have been- used in Reproductive
Medicine, please send me an e-mail with them. You find my e- mail address on the bottom of
